Security
All of us travelers are concerned with our security and interested in knowing the conditions of the country we are going to visit.
To say that Mexico is an unsafe country is both a true and false statement at the same time. In reality, all countries have differing safety conditions depending on the area and varying problems. If we look at the different mediums of communication (the internet, newspapers, radio and television), it is evident that terrible things happen everyday – attacks, terrorism, violent demonstrations, etc – and that they are not limited to a certain geographical area.
With the conditions that reign in the world, we believe that in addition to the security provided by the governments of the countries we visit, we travelers should also act responsibly in regards to our own security.
How many times in our travels do we walk with our camera in public view and just hold on to it? Or we get on public transportation with having properly guarded our wallet or travel documents? Sometimes we don’t pay attention to our intuition and continue walking through a neighborhood that doesn’t feel safe.
Our invitation is that you come to a country with an enormous cultural and historical offering, wide diversity, entertainment and grand attractions and with many responsible people who are interested in providing the tourist with quality service. But do not forget the necessary precautions that, as a traveler, we should take to reduce the risks.
With that in mind, we suggest some precautions that can never be overdone.
Passport
Always travel with a photocopy of your passport - you never know when you may need it.
Withdrawing Money
It is always best to withdraw money in locations with security and avoid doing so at night.
In the money menu you will find additional information. / En el menú de dinero encontrarás información adicional.
Taxis in Mexico City
- Carefully plan out your route through the city. In this way it is possible to visit various places of interest by walking from one to the other.
- Many hotels offer taxi service, they are more expensive than street cabs but they offer the security you are looking for.
- If you hail a taxi on a thoroughfare, it’s a good idea to get in a taxi that someone is getting out of.
- If the taxi you boarded doesn’t give you a feeling of security, ask the driver to pull over, immediately get out, and pay him while you are outside of the car.
- Take advantage of the tourist bus called Turibus. It stops at the main areas of the city.
- Use the metro (subway) or the buses that circulate on the most important avenues of the city. Along the avenue Insurgentes runs a bus with fixed stops that will get you close to various places of interest, and on the avenue Paseo de la Reforma, there are buses and collective transportation that are very safe.
- If you are in a restaurant, request a taxi from the hostess or head waiter and ask them if it is safe.
Emergency Telephone Numbers
Download the PDF document with telephone numbers of the main cities in the country. / Baja el archivo PDF con los teléfonos de las principales ciudades del país.
On the Highway
Try to always drive during the day, since at night the dangers increase everywhere and a breakdown or accident tends to be more complicated.
It will always be easier to get assistance on the turnpikes.
Dial the number 078 when you have a mishap on the highway and they will help you.
If you travel at night by bus, always use 1st class.
On Public Transportation
Try to use it during downtimes. As in any country, the hours of entering work and leaving the office are the most congested. Fortunately for you, you are on vacation and can be more flexible with your schedule. Put your wallet and/or documents in a safe place and if you are carrying a purse or bag, be sure it is well closed.
