Internet Access
If you bring your laptop with you, each day there are more and more restaurants and cafes that have internet access.
If you left it home and you want to be reached, it won’t be difficult to find an internet café. All cities have them, including small towns, and sometimes even in rural areas.
Rates vary from $10.00 pesos (0.66 euros) for 60 minutes up to $20.00 (1.3 euros) per hour at the most expensive locations.
There are also prepaid cards that you can buy in some establishments for $50.00 (3.3 euros), $100.00 (6.6 euros), or $150.00 (10 euros). To use the card, you need to call a telephone number to activate it before configuring it on your computer. It is extremely simple to do.
Calling Cards and Public Phones
To use a public phone you need a calling card named Ladatel. These are sold in various commercial establishments and also at news stands. There are different prices: $30.00 (2 euros), $50.00 (3.3 euros) or $100.00 (6.6 euros). With these cards you can call both domestically and internationally. They work very well for local calls, although long distance calls quickly exhaust their credit.
There are also prepaid long distance calling cards. Generally, you can purchase these at news stands and they are more efficient for long distance calls within Mexico or internationally. To use these types of cards, you need a regular phone or a cellular phone, although there are also some that offer the option of calling from a public phone. To dial, you call an access number and follow the voice recording that always asks you to enter your card’s pin number (NIP) and then provides you with dialing instructions. Some recordings offer the option of selecting a language.
Cell Phones
Cell phones in Mexico have wide signal coverage throughout the country.
Your telephone will automatically offer you roaming service with a Mexican operator and you can make your call. Cell phones also offer you the option of manually selecting the operator you wish to use.
The three main cell phone companies are the following: Iusacell, Telcel and Telefónica.
Before traveling to Mexico, it is important to consult your cell phone provider concerning which companies you can have roaming service, as well as the characteristics of your telephone, since there are different types of technology such as GSM and CDMA and agree upon which service as the best coverage.
Coverage throughout the country is overall very good, and you will always have coverage in the principle cities of the country. If you are one of those who likes to tour nature sites or visit rural villages, it is likely that your telephone will not always have signal. Nonetheless, the locals can guide you towards an area with coverage.
